When someone asked about what they would like to get or gift
someone when it comes to some real good chocolates; invariably the choice is
between – Ferrero Rocher, Toblerone or Hershey’s. Of all these, Toblerone has a
pretty unique shape, and is something that a lot of us have grown up to
resonate with.
The famous triangle
and the mountain logo… But there are a lot of sneaky little details that we
have always missed and often don’t even know about the famous chocolate.
Toblerone is immensely popular around the globe and a
favorite among all the chocolate enthusiasts. There was a recent
development, wherein they tried to
change the shape of it, and it was received with mixed reactions.
Nevertheless, the chocolate has a number of exciting facts
that no one would have told you about… So here you go!
1. What’s in a name; Well, there is actually:
Ever wondered about the origins of the name Toblerone?
Theodore Tobler created this iconic chocolate in
collaboration with his cousin, Emil Baumann, back in 1908.
The word ‘Toblerone’ is derived from combining the name of
the creator, Theodore Tobler with the Italian word for ‘Nougat’ which is
Torrone. Now isn’t that an interesting way to leave a mark on the world!
2. The Toblerone ‘stardom’ could literally ‘wrap’ the earth!
Many of you might be asking yourselves how popular really is
this chocolate! Let us tell you that if you were to combine all the Toblerrone
bars sold each year, the length would be longer than the circumference of the
Earth! Don’t believe us? We have the numbers ready…
If the total number of Toblerone bars produced in a year
were to be laid end to end, they would cover a distance of 62,000 km… This
distance is longer than the circumference of earth which is about 40,075 kms.
3. Last Bar to be Produced in Switzerland:
That’s right! Toblerone is the last chocolate bar that
Switzerland produces on its own. All the other swiss chocolates are produced in
the developing countries. Sounds like Toblerone is a really special chocolate!
Just like its name, the shape of this iconic chocolate too
has a reason! The much loved triangular shape of the chocolate bar is inspired
from mountain Matterhorn which is a mountain of the Alps, linking the main
watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy.
Also, the shape is a unique one for chocolate bars and is
patented.
5. Toblerone ‘inspired’ Architecture:
Toblerone has not only taken inspiration from places but,
has also been the inspiration of a set of student residences.
On the Oxford Road, Manchester, a set of student residences
have the triangular shape similar to the chocolate. These residences are built
for the students of the University of Manchester and are known as Toblerones.
6. Hidden meaning in the logo:
Here’s another Toblerone Fun Fact… The next time you buy a
Toblerone, have a close look at its logo, it contains the hidden image of a
bear which isn’t much noticeable in the first glance.
It is said that the bear is a tribute to the Swiss city of
Bern – whose Coat of Arms is a bear, where the chocolate company was
established.
7. Toblerone Fun Facts; You are eating it WRONG:
Or rather breaking it wrong before you eat it… that kind of
makes the whole process WRONG!
The actual way to break the Toblerone triangles is to press
them ‘in’, rather then break them ‘out’.
